Why RecentWork

Set it and forget it

Automatic

Runs silently in the background. Every file you edit appears in your RecentWork folder — no manual saving or tagging.

Lightweight

Uses macOS native FSEvents — near-zero CPU and memory. No Spotlight indexing, no database. Just symlinks.

Fully local

No cloud, no accounts, no telemetry. Everything stays on your Mac. Your files are your business.

Three commands, then done

1

Install & initialize

Download the DMG or install via Homebrew. Run recent-work init to pick which folders to watch.

2

Start the daemon

Run recent-work start. It registers as a launchd service and starts automatically on login.

3

Open Finder

Your ~/RecentWork folder fills up with symlinks to every file you edit. Pinned right in your Finder sidebar.

~ $ recent-work init
Watching: ~/Documents, ~/Desktop, ~/repos

~ $ recent-work start
Daemon started. Runs automatically on login.
~ $ recent-work status
